Guess what’s coming to ereaders? Book 2, <a title="Summer Sisters series" href="http://www.jeanoram.com/books/summer-sisters/" target="_blank">Love and Dreams: A Summer Sisters Beach Reads Contemporary Romance by Jean Oram!

Last week, <a title="Jasmine Haynes" href="http://www.jasminehaynes.com" target="_blank">Jasmine Haynes tagged me to chat a bit about my latest work and I decided to turn it over to Love and Dreams heroine, Maya Summer.

Maya Summer from the Romance Summer Sisters series by Jean Oram

1) What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person?

Allow me to introduce you to Maya Summer, the second born sister in the Summer family…

2) When and where is the story set?

Hey, it’s Maya Summer here. My story, Love and Dreams–written by Jean Oram (she did an okay job of telling my story although I wish she’d shown a bit more of my sultry side–hello? What’s a gal got to do?)–is set on Nymph Island which is where my family’s 110-year-old cottage is located. That’s in Muskoka, Canada. Cottage country. Just north of Toronto in Ontario. You know the place? Lots of rocks and trees. Very pretty, quiet, clean, and beautiful. Anyway, it’s okay if you don’t. Jean will tell you all about it in my story. Keep reading!

3) What should we know about him/her?

There’s lots you should know about me. First, I am very determined. Connor–he’s the hero in my story–calls me his spitfire which pretty much sums it up. My family means a ton to me. I have four sisters, a five-year-old niece who is fun (she’s quite the kid). We call that girl Tigger for a reason! She’s bouncy. Us sisters also share a mother who isn’t doing so well. She had a stroke years ago and we all want to take care of her, but Hailey, the eldest, does a lot of it. You know big sisters, always think they run the show! (Sometimes I can sneak in there and get some credit and sunshine.)

4) What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life?

Okay, so I graduated from the University of Toronto. Not to brag, but top of my class and all that. The only problem was that it has been really, really hard to find a job. And I really need a good job. You see, my sisters and I ended up way behind in paying the taxes on our cottage and we’re in danger of losing it. At first I was like, big deal, sell that old beast. But…things change.

Anyway, in comes hunky-hunk Connor MacKenzie who is the king of Toronto. I thought my prayers were answered. First, a great job with him–easy peasy, right? Just strut myself and wait for him to notice because with a great job comes money. Save the cottage! Ta da! Only it didn’t quite work that way…

5) What is the personal goal of the character?

I have always imagined myself being someone. You know…sexy, in charge. Someone people come to because she makes things happen. She knows stuff. She’d powerful. I’d sleep my way to the top if I had to, but I don’t think I should have to. You know? (Although sleeping with Connor MacKenzie would NOT be a hardship. Hello! Powerful, intriguing, smart and with shoulders that are a serious…wait, I have to keep this PG, don’t I? Let’s just say if every man was like Connor women would be spending a lot less time outside of the bedroom.)

But back to my story, I knew wanted and I knew what I had to do and where I needed to go. Only problem? My plan wasn’t working. At all. Thanks to Connor.

6) Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?

Next week you can learn more from two of my box set buddies, Jax Cassidy and Julie Farrell!

Jax Cassidy:

<a href="http://www.jeanoram.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/JaxCassidy.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-852 alignleft" src="http://www.jeanoram.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/JaxCassidy.jpg" alt="Jax Cassidy" width="201" height="218" />Jax Cassidy was born in exotic Southeast Asia. At five years old her family fled the war-torn country of Vietnam for the American dream. As a child, she learned the English language through daily PBS children’s programming (Sesame Street, The Electric Company, etc.) and soap operas like Days of Our Lives and General Hospital. When she wasn’t in front of the tele, she entertained herself by weaving epic tales of heartbreak and love in her journals. When technology crept to the forefront, she happily typed those stories out on her brother’s wordprocessing machine and stored the dot matrix print pages underneath her bed..

In her late teens, she wanted to be just like Connie Chung and pursued a broadcast journalism career. Her efforts were quickly rewarded with several creative writing awards and a national Asian American journalism scholarship that enabled her to work for the local newspaper. Stifled by the lack of creativity at her jobs—between working for editors in the communications desk, working in her family-owned restaurant, and longing for adventure—she jumped at the opportunity to move to Paris, France for three years.

In the City of Light, she brushed off her dusty art supplies to immerse herself in the artist’s lifestyle. She was inspired and often mentored by successful comic book artists such as Jean Giraud aka Moebius, Philippe Caza, Bruno Bellamy, Sandrine Gestin and Marc Bati…to name a few. Her experiences in Paris, and traveling through Europe, opened her eyes to the beauty of the people, the elegant lifestyle, mouth-watering cuisine, luscious wines, exquisite couture and breathtaking countryside. The dreamy adventure came to an end when she realized how much she missed the American food chains and her close-knit, yet drama-filled, family.

Once bitten by the travel bug, she spent the next few years “city hopping” across the States and leaving a trail of broken hearts along the way. After being able to mark Paris off her Cities I’ll Live Someday list, she could now strike through Los Angeles with a red marker. While living in the entertainment mecca, her love for romantic comedies and romance novels led her to the Romance Writers of America, which prompted her to join the Los Angeles Romance Authors (LARA) chapter. She is currently a member of several online and local chapters and has served as a board member for both LARA and CFRW.

On the work front, boredom set in after almost a decade of taking on challenging freelance and temp positions—anything from actress, production assistant, makeup artist, hair stylist, screenwriter, photographer, ghostwriter, technical writer…to personal assistant to the highly powerful and filthy rich—she decided to do what she should have done all along…become an author!

Within the first few months of joining her local chapter, she was offered two writing contracts through Phaze Publishing and Amber Quill Press. Not long after, she helped launched the multicultural/multi-ethnic line for Parker Publishing with her novella SIREN’S SEDUCTION, in the LOTUS BLOSSOM CHRONICLES print anthology. With publishing credits under her belt she went on to sign with her fabulous dream agent, Roberta Brown of the Brown Literary Agency.

When Ms. Cassidy isn’t working on her next project(s) she feeds her K-drama addiction and can also be found lounging at day spa or sipping lattes at the local café. But don’t let her indulgences fool you, she enthusiastically volunteers for charities (whenever possible) and is always searching for ways to make the world a better place.

You can find Jax and her interview next Monday, September 1, at:<a title="Jax Cassidy" href="http://www.jaxcassidy.com/blog" target="_blank"> www.jaxcassidy.com/blog

Julie Farrell:

<a href="http://www.jeanoram.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/juliefarrell.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-854 alignleft" src="http://www.jeanoram.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/juliefarrell.jpg" alt="Julie Farrell." width="300" height="200" />Life is for living, and I’m loving it!

I write steamy romances that will make your heart pound hard and your thighs surge with desire!

There was a time, not so long ago, when all I wanted was to stop my heart pounding hard and my mind surging with fear. You see, I suffered with panic attacks. The fear debilitated me on a daily basis, and the feelings of weakness undermined my self-esteem. This ‘fear of fear’ became so immense that there were times when I was scared to even go outside of my home.

At those times, all I wanted to do was write, because my imaginary world of fiction provided a soothing escape from reality. The strong female characters I created allowed me to pretend everything was okay in my world. And the sexy men in my fictive imagination were protective, loving, and strong.

I’ve never been someone to give up! Even at my lowest, I knew I could and would recover. Thanks to a great support network, a wonderful self-help book (The Panic Attacks Workbook by David Carbonell), and my own patient determination I experienced my last ever panic attack in January 2013. Then, in April 2014, I proved how strong I’d become by backpacking with a friend in the chaos and heat of India – something that had filled me with dread back when my fear was dominating my every waking breath.

But nothing in this life is ever a waste. During the years when I was suffering from panic attacks, I learnt to write well! I honed my craft, and when I came out the other end, I was ready to self-publish, knowing that if I can cope with panic attacks and survive, then I can become a successful indie author too! My books are the products of this amazing journey that I’ve been on, and now I can’t wait to find out what other delights await me, just around the corner!

Never give up on your dreams, and don’t let the setbacks of today ruin your tomorrow! You can do it – just like I did!

New Release: Love and Rumors: The Summer Sisters Book 1

 Posted by Jean Oram , 01 July 2014 · 226 views

Happy summer!

I wrote this book with you and your summer in mind. Love and Rumors, the first book in the Summer Sisters series is just in time for the beach, summer vacation, chilling out by the pool, or hanging out in the backyard.

Personally, I love a light, fun romance to read during the holidays and so I plucked the setting (cottage and all!) from my own childhood and adult summers in Muskoka Ontario, Canada. And because I love reading about families, I gave the series four sisters who are close–but still have their secrets and upsets.

<a href="http://www.jeanoram.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/loveandrumors51k.jpg">

Love and Rumors features photographer Hailey Summer & movie star Finian Alexander and the trouble they get into while they try to use each other to meet their own secret goals–and, of course, fall in love along the way!

Here’s a sneak peek:

* * *

Finn followed the woman through the bar, ignoring the rough floorboards under his sandals as he watched her narrow hips sway. There was something about her beanpole body that did strange things to his mind. He wanted to bend her around him. Feel those long limbs. Skin to skin.

He gave himself a shake. Booty call later. Right now he had to friend her, draw out her photography skills, plant the idea that she could, and should, sell photos of him and get rich. Everyone wanted money.

He paused. This region, Muskoka, was a summer playground for the rich. Did that mean she was wealthy? Was that why she wasn’t snapping photos of him? She was an heiress to a multibillion-dollar company, and didn’t need to sell photos of the rich and famous because she was one of them?

If so, then he’d take the fame angle. Who wouldn’t want the prestige of selling an exclusive photo for thousands of dollars? He took another look at her swaying hips. Her jean shorts were faded white in the butt. They were a tad past “fashionable” and heading toward worn-out. Her sandals looked as though they should have been replaced a few seasons ago.

Hmm. Maybe not an heiress, then. Which meant he could likely sell her on fame and money. He grinned. This was too easy.
She turned suddenly, and Finn almost ran into her. “Whoa there.” He grabbed her elbows, his eyes meeting hers as he moved into her space, barely avoiding knocking her down. Mmm. She smelled nice. Outdoorsy. Fresh. Like rain and apple pie.

He glanced at her hands, looking for the coffee she’d had earlier, and found his eyes stuck on the cleavage exposed by her low-cut tank top.

Her knees buckled slightly as he leaned toward her heat, and her face paled.

What could he say? He had that effect on women. Although the pale face was odd. Usually they flushed. He glanced past her and realized he’d followed her—entranced by her sweet, worn-out butt—straight into a corner. There was no excuse for having followed her this closely. For cornering her. For holding her so close. For ogling her chest.

He gave her a dazzling smile. “Sorry, thought you were my sister.”

“You don’t have a sister,” she breathed. She blinked, eyes wide, catching herself.

Hot damn. She knew who he was. After days of being practically anonymous, he found it refreshing. A relief. Scratch that; it was sexy. Damn sexy.

“How do you know?” he asked with a grin.

“You’re a horrible liar.” She pushed him away, but he held on tight.

“What do you mean? I’m a fantastic liar. I get paid big money to lie every day.”

“To lie?” She crossed her arms in the sliver of space between them, eyebrow raised, her camera bag’s strap digging a swath into her shoulder’s skin.

She was challenging him. How interesting. He propped a hand on the wall beside her head, leaning close. Her eyes narrowed as he trapped her. Oh, this was fun. He’d forgotten how much fun a challenge was. He’d gotten used to women dropping their panties as soon as he shot them the right flavor of grin.

Time to pour it on.

He dropped his voice so it was low, gravelly. “Wouldn’t you like that?”

“What?”

He ran a finger down the side of her jaw and watched, mesmerized, as her eyes fluttered shut and her breathing stuttered. “To pretend to be someone else. Pretend to be mine for the night. Hot for me to touch you in ways that will make you pant.”

He ran a fingertip over her bottom lip, closing in. Any second now she’d suck on his finger, pull him into the bathroom….

He didn’t expect the slap.

And he certainly didn’t expect someone as slight as her to be strong enough to leave him seeing white spots. Wow.

She hadn’t even hinted that she was going to move.

Her mouth dropped open in horror, before she clamped her hands over it. He watched as she wrestled with herself, her back pushed against the wall. If he played his cards right he’d bet his new BMW she’d get him ice for his cheek.

But there was something else behind her eyes. Something real. Something he’d forgotten.

Oh…right.

He was one of those big cocky jerks women hated.

His stomach churned and he reached out for her, to let her know he didn’t mean it. To show her he was actually a nice guy. A guy whose mother would beat him about the ears if she’d heard what he’d just said to a nice Canadian girl in a nice Canadian town on a nice Canadian holiday.

Instead, he watched as his wild-haired chick slipped past him, fire blazing in her eyes. Filled with longing and regret, Finn placed his palms on the wall and hung his head. He liked her already.

Five Reasons Chick Lit Isn’t Dead

 Posted by Jean Oram , 09 May 2014 · 2,757 views

It’s International Chick Lit month!

What does that mean? It means it’s time to celebrate those humourous romances that warm our heart and tickle our funny bone! In other words, read, dream, laugh, and love. Think books like <a title="Bridget Jones's Diary" href="http://www.amazon.com/Bridget-Joness-Diary-Helen-Fielding-ebook/dp/B000QJM8Z0/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1399154593&sr=1-1&keywords=bridget+jones+diary" target="_blank">Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Devil Wears Prada, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Whiskey and Gumdrops.

And speaking of <a title="Whiskey and Gumdrops a Kindle Romance for only 99 cents this week!" href="http://www.amazon.com/Whiskey-Gumdrops-Blueberry-Springs-Contemporary-ebook/dp/B00GCDODSE/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1391279628&sr=1-1&keywords=whiskey+and+gumdrops" target="_blank">Whiskey and Gumdrops, it is on sale this week to help celebrate International Chick Lit month AND Mother’s Day!
Why Chick Lit Is Not Dead

Here are five reasons why I believe chick lit is not dead. (Some have said it is. In fact, I had literary agents read <a title="Champagne and Lemon Drops a Free Kindle Romance" href="http://www.amazon.com/Champagne-Lemon-Drops-Blueberry-Contemporary/dp/0991860225/" target="_blank">Champagne and Lemon Drops and say, “It’s funny, but I just can’t sell chick lit right now.” Funny, that book has had over a quarter of a million downloads on Amazon alone! And that is my number one reason why I think chick lit isn’t dead.

1) People are still reading and downloading chick lit. (See evidence above.)

2) There’s always room in our hearts and on our bookshelves for books that make us dream, laugh, and love while we read–and that’s the very heart of chick lit.

3) Your favourite romantic comedies that have done well in the box office? Many of them were chick lit novels first! For example, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and The Devil Wears Prada.

4) Check out the top 100 books on Amazon. At least half of them are romance–and when the big chick lit names like <a title="Sophie Kinsella's books" href="http://www.amazon.com/Sophie-Kinsella/e/B001H6NQJI/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1399154487&sr=1-2-ent" target="_blank">Sophie Kinsella, Lauren Weisberger and Helen Fielding put out a new book you can bet they are going to show up on those lists!

5) Big publishers are still picking up independent authors who write chick lit and publishers are business-savvy business people who wouldn’t pick up a book in a dead genre.

So there you go! That’s why I believe chick lit is still alive and well. And really, over history we have always been drawn to humour and laughter, so why would we give up on it now?

How to Put the Kindle App on Your iPad

 Posted by Jean Oram , 02 May 2014 · 291 views

So, it’s been over two months that iTunes and I have been trying to figure out how exactly I broke <a title="Rum and Raindrops on Kindle (Amazon)" href="http://amzn.to/1cxT1FP" target="_blank">Rum and Raindrops. (Yes, it is STILL not available on iTunes.)

Therefore, I’m going to show you how to place the Kindle app for iPad (free) on your iPad so you can still read Rum and Raindrops and other great books on your iPad. (You may have also noticed that Amazon often has more sales or more free books than any other vendor which is something you may want to take advantage of from time to time even if you don’t have a Kindle.)

<a title="Rum and Raindrops." href="http://amzn.to/1hOy4YQ">

Get the Free Kindle App for iPad

First, from your iPad, go to the App Store and look for the <a title="Free Kindle App for iPad" href="https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/kindle/id302584613?mt=8" target="_blank">Kindle App. Install/download the free app. (You can also use this app on your phone–read in both places and it will sync between the two devices so you always know where you left off.)

Sign Into Amazon Via Your Kindle App

Once downloaded, open the app. You will need your Amazon account email address and password.

New Customer on Amazon? Do This First

If you are a new customer and don’t have an Amazon account, pop over to your local Amazon website and set up a free account. Click where it says ‘Hello. Sign in’ at the top right of the Amazon home page.

<a href="http://www.jeanoram.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Screen-Shot-2014-05-02-at-10.03.21-AM.png">
Click to sign in–and from there start an account.

From that page, hit the radio button that says you are a new customer, then click the yellow sign in button.

<img class="aligncenter wp-image-722 size-full" src="http://www.jeanoram.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Screen-Shot-2014-05-02-at-10.03.35-AM-e1399046882794.png" alt="Click the radio button saying you are a new customer." width="569" height="343" />What Happens After You Sign Into the Kindle App on Your iPad

Amazon will register your new device and sync–meaning any books you have bought on Amazon will appear on your iPad’s Kindle App items list. This does NOT mean they are downloaded!! You have to click on the book for it to download to your device. (You will see a button that says ‘cloud’–that means those items are ‘available’ (you’ve purchased them) to download onto your actual device. If you click the ‘device’ button instead, that will show the items that are truly on your device. And if you interrupt a book while it is downloading–say at 80%–thinking you have 80% of the book on your device…um, no. Sorry. It doesn’t seem that way.

How to Buy Books in Your Kindle App

Short answer: You can’t. I know, lame, right? (It’s an Apple thing, not an Amazon thing, because trust me, Amazon wants to make your shopping experience as easy as possible. Think ‘one click purchasing.’)

What you need to do is pop over to your Amazon store using a web browser and purchase <a title="Rum and Raindrops." href="http://amzn.to/1cxT1FP" target="_blank">Rum and Raindrops so it can download to your iPad. Or, if you are feeling unsure about things and want to experiment a little bit more using a free book in order to get the hang of things, check out Champagne and Lemon Drops.

TIP: Want an iPad optimized Amazon site that allows you to swipe and all that other cool stuff? Try this link: <a href="http://read.amazon.com" target="_blank">http://read.amazon.com.

TIP: On your iPhone and want a mobile optimized site that is easier to use from a small screen? Try this link: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/kindlemobilestore" target="_blank">http://www.amazon.com/kindlemobilestore

Once you have the book purchased from Amazon’s website, go back to your device and the item should show up in the ‘all items’ list. If not, pull down on the menu to refresh it and it should appear. If that doesn’t work, click on the top menu and in the list of options, you should see ‘sync.’ Click to sync your device manually.

Once Rum and Raindrops appears in your items list, click on the cover to download it to your device.

Start reading and enjoy!

Get in Character! Be in My Next Book

 Posted by Jean Oram , 27 February 2014 · 220 views

Want to be in my next novel? Live forever on the written page? Be famous? I’ve got a few characters in the upcoming story Love and Rumors that could become you!

Here’s the scoop. <a title="CLIC Sargent" href="http://www.clicsargent.org.uk/" target="_blank">CLIC Sargent in the UK is holding a charity auction featuring some very wonderful authors such as Jane Green (such a fan!), the awesome Michele Gorman, as well as my good friend (fellow indie author alert!) Julie Farrell. Oh, and myself!

<a title="Get in Character with Jean Oram and CLIC Sargent" href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/gwc/charity-campaign/Bid-to-be-a-named-character-in-your-favourite-author%E2%80%99s-book/5000000228?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=getincharacter_susanlewis" target="_blank">

Did you know that every day ten children / youth in the UK are told they have cancer? As someone who has had cancer affect her family, I know not only how devastating this can be, but how disruptive it can be to everyday life as well. Luckily, in our situation the cancer center was close by, and rarely did anyone have to take time off of work. But things are different when your child isn’t well. And this is where CLIC Sargent steps in to help by being there for families during some of their most trying times. To quote them, “We provide clinical, practical and emotional support to help them cope with cancer and get the most out of life.” And the best part is that for the next week and a half (until March 9th) we can support them in a fun way by ‘getting in character.’

Want to know more about the book you could be in called Love and Rumors?

Love and Rumors by Jean Oram

Love and Rumors (Summer Sisters Book 1): A Muskoka Beach Reads Contemporary Romance

One photographer who needs money—fast. One movie star with an offer as tempting as his bad boy smile.

Hailey Summer, a photographer who has remortgaged her entire life in order to follow her dreams, needs more time. As the eldest of four girls, her self-appointed job has always been to solve everyone’s problems—including holding onto the family’s historic cottage that’s precious to all of them. But with the cottage about to be seized for back taxes, Hailey’s going to have to confront more than just the family members she’s kept in the dark.

When Finian Alexander closes his eyes he sees is his family’s destitute past and the unfulfilled promises he’s made to others. Only a fraction away from making the A-list food chain and fulfilling his promises, Finian needs help from the paparazzi to push his next ‘bad boy of Hollywood’ escapade into the limelight. Problem is he’s in the Canadian Muskokas and the only photographer he’d consider partnering with slaps him every time he deserves it—which is increasingly often as he becomes more desperate.

Will Hailey and Finian give in to the easy way out of their problems, or will discover how alike they truly are when they hit the tabloids—together?

Rum and Raindrops: A Hot New Release

 Posted by Jean Oram , 24 February 2014 · 202 views

Rum and Raindrops, the third book in the Blueberry Springs series is an Amazon hot new release for women’s fiction!
Thank you, readers!

iTunes Readers Who Want Rum and Raindrops For Only $1.99–Read This!

If you are waiting for the iTunes edition of Rum and Raindrops, I talked to iTunes support this morning. They’re backed up to the gills with their new books which means Rum and Raindrops–which is now available elsewhere–is going to be delayed for iTunes readers. (They’re talking another week or more!) AH!
On the weekend, you may have heard that I held a reader appreciation sale. Not realizing just how backed up iTunes was I didn’t realize that the book would not be available for my iTunes readers meaning they were missing out on this one-time promo. Oh no!
Solution: Drop a comment below (WordPress asks for your email address–don’t worry, it’s completely secure) and when the book comes out on iTunes, I will send you an email with a promotion code so you can get Rum and Raindrops from iTunes for the release weekend price of $1.99. OR, if you prefer, you can sign up for my author newsletter (always a smart thing to do since it means you won’t miss out on future deals or freebies!) and I’ll send a quick newsletter item out with the info you’ll need to get the book on iTunes.
Timeline Details: I’ll offer this promo for the TWO days after the book is released on iTunes (just like I did with the other places). And I will send the newsletter item out when the book goes live on iTunes. Easy-peasy!

Rum and Raindrops

One nature guide. One accidental forest fire. And one steamy investigator hot on her tail.
Jen Kulak’s good at running from her problems, so when she finds her best friend and boyfriend in bed together she burns rubber, never looking back. When Jen finds the quirky town of Blueberry Springs, she finally feels as though she’s found a place she can call home, settle in, and get to know herself. With help from her boss, she rediscovers her love of nature and begins giving wilderness tours, which would be perfect if it weren’t for the fact that she may have accidentally just burned down the forest she depends upon for her fledgling business. And it would figure that Rob Raine, the man of her dreams, also happens to be the fire investigator hot on the case.
Can Jen find the strength to fight the accusations that could cost her everything? Or will she run again, ignoring the sparks that fly between her and Rob, and torching her chances at a happily ever after?
Find out in this small town contemporary romance, the third standalone book in the Blueberry Springs series.
