Slush pile tip: This won't make or break your piece, but it's not "OK" or "o.k." It's "okay." Just one of those things that alerts me that you're a novice writer.

Yes! Alright vs. all right is another one, but that one doesn't bother me as much. So many rules, though! I can see how it's confusing.

Actually, since the origin of the term is an acronym, 'OK' is the correct usage. 'Okay,' is kind of like writing 'ugh' or 'grrr'--it's a visual representation of a sound, and that is why it is accepted.

Good Old Kinderhook. Every editor I've worked with corrected it from OK to okay. Though I'm sure everyone has their own personal preference, as with all things.

Am I being helpful in the Query Critiques subforum, or am I just startling people with my Wall of Text bombings?

I too began as a newb with little experience, unsure if I was helping or harming. As a reader, your opinion is always important. Whatever you feel will probably be felt by other readers, therefore it's important to share your opinion. I also appreciate in depth critiques. I can't claim to have read all of your comments but from what I've seen they seem helpful.

You helped me a lot. You've commented on my query twice now, and I always feel like it's better afterwards =)

Varied opinions on queries are great, as we all see different points. Just be cautious dispensing advice about how the industry works unless you know for *sure* what you are telling newbies is correct.

Another nine-inches fell today. If anyone out there has any of that global warming everyone tells me about, please send some of it my way.

Technically it's called climate change and it is probably the reason for the crazy winter. So, that extra 9 inches might be because of global warming :-)

Last summer was the coolest on record in Marquette.
This winter has already been the longest on record, and shows no sign of letting up yet.
I'm, going to need a second mortgage to pay my snow-plowing bill when it arrives.

Climate change alters the jet stream, which changes weather patterns. Rising ocean temps affect the jet stream, hence the term, "global warming." But the cold winters are caused by stagnant air that is trapped by the jet stream.

I've been sitting on the query for Tenth Realm for a while, and the one for Low Road was polished up last night. Figured I should post them at some point. :)
