It's that time of year when some agents close to queries, try to catch up on their backlog through the holidays.

Michelle Witte of Mansion Street is closing to queries as of Monday, October 15th until 2013, so you still have a few days to query her if so inclined.

Around now, I guess.

Seriously, there will be a few around now, a few who close between Thanksgiving and New Years, a few who just close for a couple of weeks around Christmas, and plenty who don't close at all. Just have to keep an eye on Twitter, agent sites, etc.

Dang it. Well I'll do just that. And if it means I have to send out fewer queries this month then so be it. Maybe I'd get a better feel of what's working vs. what isn't.

I'll try to make this a good thing.

But it must be nice to be able to say "No, no thanks, Not taking any more work right now until after the holidays."

Le sigh. A working girl can dream.

So I guess that means this is not a good time to start sending out queries? Is it better to wait until after the new year, or can you send them and the agents will just have them on hold until the new year?

I say unless they state specifically on their website or twitter or facebook? Send it.

The first Mark Mallen novel, Untold Damage, is now available via Midnight Ink! Look for the second Mark Mallen novel, Critical Damage in April of 2014 (Should we all be here, natch).

Yup, what Bones said. Just because some are closing to queries doesn't mean you can't query others.

The only really "bad time" to query is when you and your manuscript aren't ready.

Well, WIP won't be ready to query until late winter/early spring of 2013 so I guess I lucked into "good timing", LOL.
As for the Mayans -- I had a scholar of their culture tell me not to worry, because all that "end of the world" stuff is a misreading of the literature and culture and is totally bogus. So you'd better buy some Christmas presents anyway, Fer.

The frustrating part for me is, I did find it sooner, but I took a break from working on my query from about June until November to work on a film. So I didn't have a query I was happy with until last week. If only I had done that in July! I could have had an agent by now. Instead it is never going to happen. Though I'm already doing better than in 2005 when I sent out one query, got rejected and never sent out another until writing another book entirely. To be fair I was only 19 and this site didn't exist then to tell me how to do things properly, or to give encouragement.

Has anyone ever had any success querying in December that can cheer us up? (Also I hear January is a terrible time to query as well because of all the yahoos with their new years resolutions. urgggggg!)

So is it safe to assume that if you go onto an agency's website and they dont' say they are closed to submissions for the holidays they are fine to query? Because it would be a bummer if some were only posting it to their twitters. Because even if I read their most recent tweets, I can't read all the tweets by all the agencies.

I see this as a good thing. More re-reads, my cp's get to see my ms one more time, and another re-read or two. Because come Jan. 1, I am hitting this full force and going for it!

I know people who've had requests and even offers of representation over Christmas break. Plenty of agents remain open to queries, so query them for now, and if you're still on the hunt in January, query any others you'd like who open back up. Don't worry about them having a deluge of New Years Resolutioners. There's always a deluge of SOMETHING, so just worry about whether YOUR query and manuscript are ready.
