The Guardians Gateway, is a YA Fantasy about gateways to other worlds and the guardians who protect them. Rayana Karver is a 17 year old who discovers she is from one of those worlds and learns she is from a royal family. Her mother raised her on Earth to keep her safe. Someone evil from another world is wanting her dead. She was born to bring another world, and her own world together. The Evil one wants no part in the union of the two worlds as it will become a huge threat to his own world and existence.

Intro to Chapter One of 'Guardians Gateway'

TO BE SACRIFICED BY ONES CHOICE OUT OF LOVE FOR FAMILY IS CONSIDERED JUSTIFIED ... To be a sacrifice for worlds, you knew nothing about – didn’t even know existed – is something one never dreamed would happen to them. I was born to be that sacrifice. Am I able to go through with what is expected of me to bring peace to three unknown worlds? I find I am not alone in this endeavor and together we must find the love and the strength to finally conquer the darkness that plagues our worlds with evil. Even if it means our death.

The cover idea is not for an ebook, but a hard book cover. Thank you!

Sorry, but I'm not getting YA, fantasy or other world. Also the image and font are too dark to really see, read or stand out.

I'm with Calista. It looks like the cover of a memoir. I know Twilight did the whole apple thing and that was paranormal, but at least the font was white on black for contrast. I can't read ANYTHING in your thumbnail and I should be able to at least read SOMETHING. Thumbnails on my Nook are what grab me to read the summary. If you're planning to release this as an ebook the thumbnail is one of the most important things to be considered.

If you want to keep your picture, I'd play with the levels and saturation and maybe add swirl effects in the background and among the leaves. Lose the font color completely and go with something lighter.

Also, if the top paragraph is what you want to put on the back of the book, I would make some suggestions:

The Gateway Guardians, is a YA Fantasy about gateways to other worlds and the guardians who protect them. Rayna Karver is a 17-year-old who discovers she is from one of those worlds and learns another world. She is of a royal family. She , but was raised on Earth to hide, because another world is from those who wanting her dead. She was born to be a sacrifice to bring her home another world and her world another together, and the other world wants but the people after her want no part in the union of the two worlds.

It also needs to be at least a few sentences longer, less repetitive, and have a hookier ending.

Hope that helps!

I was going to suggest the same things as Leigh, but she beat me to it! While it's a pretty picture, I don't really get a YA/fantasy feel off it. Adding swirls or something along those lines would help give it more of a magical/mystical vibe. And I agree to lighten the text. Thumbnail size, it's really difficult to read.

Ok, thanks for the tip I will give it a try. And the first paragraph was only a discription, but I may consider using some of it for a back cover.

It's much better, though I would take "young" out of your blurb. We know her age so we don't need a qualifier. As far as any adjustments from here, I'll let the professionals (Calista and Co.) take it from here. I can see the new thumbnail fine, which was my biggest gripe. My only remaining suggestion is to figure out a way to make it a little splashier. It still makes me think of a self-pubbed memoir, despite the lens flare. The other members can probably assist you better than I about how do accomplish such a thing.

A bit better, but again, it doesn't read as YA or fantasy to me.

Firstly, I'd opt for "younger" fonts, but the image still doesn't feel like fantasy or YA either. The brushes could help, but I think it'll be an uphill battle with the image. The reason the Twilight cover worked is because it was very graphic and "clean". This image is missing the graphic nature, and still feels too "old" for YA.

Also, between the font choices and the cover image, it doesn't feel current and modern-- not that it needs to say "modern day" if it's fantasy or a historical, but it DOES sort of need to say this book and cover was made "now" and it's not something that's been sitting around or was designed a few decades ago. And though it hasn't been hanging about, the styling of it doesn't feel current. The font choices, if you pick something "current" will help that.

  • Okay, Above on the first post is another one of the covers...Only this one was helped design by my Young Adult Daughters and their friends. It was tweaked and modified and they love this one. So what do you think?

The problem is that most readers browse covers that are thumbnails in size, and as dark as that cover is, and with so little contrast, it'll get overlooked because you can't easily make out any of the details, and it still doesn't pop-- nor does it feel young or give me a fantasy vibe. I'm really sorry. I just don't think this cover is doing you any favors. If you have your heart set on the apple, how about if you set it against a lighter background to make it pop. It sort of feels golden, so maybe something that carries over that theme.

Wow, that's waaaaay too dark. You need to up the contrast, not decrease it. Also, like the others have said, your font is just way too 15th century. Try something more modern (not Comic Sans or Papyrus). Check out all the fabulous free fonts at dafont.com. You can also find some pretty great brushes at Obsidian Dawn, and even tutorials on how to install them in various programs.

I'm sorry that we seem to keep harping on the same things. We're just trying to help you, I swear.

By the way..the Fall design is symbalic to the story. This was the only one with the apple that worked in colors I was looking for. I was mostly looking for a fall with Black back ground and this one was the only one that popped out to me. So I added more lights and effects. I am also downloading brushes for my Paint Shop. I will see what more I can do with the look.

Have to be honest here, it doesn't really remind me of YA but does remind me of TWILIGHT. Get a cover that shows and highlights something unique about the plot.

I agree w/Calista on this one.

Can you use something different, something about the character(s) on the cover and have say falling leaves around them or the title within per se a leaf? Something that says "hey it's autumn" but not "hey look at me! I look like TWILIGHT"? The fall/autumn feeling may be symbolic to the story, but MAKE it relevant to the story. Show how your book is different.

I see the cover and I think either Twilight or one of the Grimm Fairy Tales b/c of the maiden who takes a bite of a poisoned apple.

It's still way too dark, and even when at its full size, it's still not really clear as to what it is. The font is a bit better, since it has more of a fantasy feel, but stylistically, feels a bit dated. I'm really sorry! I wish I could say you were heading in the right direction, but it sort of feels like we're going around in circles. Can you start with something that has a light (or bright) background to begin with? It doesn't have to be anything white or cream, but maybe something with a bit of color? If we're dealing with autumn, maybe something in the reds and yellows and golds? If you really have your heart set on something like the apple, maybe a canvas of autumn leaves, all red and yellow, and then a darker apple on top of that. There's also a ton of stock that you could use. Maybe something like this? http://www.bigstockp...-fantasy-forest And then add your own elements to it to make it your own -- or not. lol.

As for the font, how about something like Unzialish? http://www.dafont.co...nt?l[]=10&l[]=1 or Dilana http://www.dafont.co...imentype.font?l[]=10&l[]=1 ? Dafont has a ton of choices that you can use commercially.

I can't actually tell on my screen what the new picture is. It's all a blur of dark colors. I like the font loads better than the old one, and your contrast of text against background is better, too. I feel the flares are a bit over used, though.

Calista, I love that picture you pointed out. Especially the right half with the swirls. Not too hot about the second font, to be honest, but that first one feels almost like it's in the same family as her new font.
