Ms. Johnson, I don't know if you're still checking in, but if you are, would you please let us know if you have auto-replies?  I sent a query Monday (and of course am sick to my stomach since I think my query letter is standing in my way, and this small batch is for the agents I want more than all others), and want to know if there should have been confirmation of receipt. Thank you.

I just sent my query in last night. I'm nervous but then again I'm excited to be trying. If it works out I'll be extremely thrilled, if not then I'll keep smiling and keep working hard ^_^

Hi Alys,

No I don't have an autoresponder, but I just looked through my queries that came in on Monday and don't see Sacred Blood anywhere (I looked through your blog to find your title).

I do respond to every query that comes in, and that response time varies (a longer wait is actually a good thing).

I hope this helps :)

~Michelle

So Ms. Johnson you say a longer wait is considered a good thing? :)

Yes, that means you got past the preliminary glance and are held for a closer look. :)

So when an agent says their response time is such and such weeks, thats translated too "If you hear from me sooner, you didn't make the cut." Wow lol I feel better hearing that.

I can't really answer that for all agents - I only know what my own system is ;)

Ms. Johnson, thank you for going a step beyond what I asked.  That's really awesome of you.  It's just as well that it went AWOL (I think e-mail is taking cues from the post office) since I'm reworking my query today anyway.  So this evening or tomorrow I will resubmit and wait the only way I can, which is to distract myself by working on the last book in the trilogy (though SB was written to stand alone) and outlining one of the two spin-offs, one being the backstory on each of the upiĆ³rs, and the other would spoil the ending.  I don't sleep a lot or have much of a life outside writing these day.

Michelle,

I'm not sure if you are still stopping by, but I checked your website and you mentioned some adult genres, and mention romance, but you didn't mention women's fiction. Was wondering if you or your colleague, Dr. Jamie Drowley, would be interested in a query for a work of upmarket women's fiction?

I'm at the point right now of sitting here trying to force myself to click "send" again.  Once it's sent, it's out of my hands, and the wait begins.

Since we answer them in order, you might want to press that button so you don't get behind even more people ;)

I already did. :) I've got a migraine, so exhaled hard and did it then.  Cue swearing.  Realized I forgot part of my stupid name, though my address, phone, etc., is all there. Coffee and nap, I need.

Enjoy the slush!

Michelle! I think you should tell us up to what date you are caught up on with the slush. Like how other agents do on twitter. Only just for us, because we are all special

Haha! I actually had written that and then deleted it in an earlier post because I didn't want anyone to get discouraged.
But since you asked... I have caught up to queries of January 1st, and requested material from November 8th.

I am going through them as quickly (and as thoroughly) as I can.

:)

Michelle, if you have a minute to answer random, unimportant questions, I've always wondered.... I've heard from multiple sources that agents get slammed with queries in January from multitudes of writers who made New Year's resolutions to get on the query wagon. Have you noticed anything like that? Just curious. The rumors we writers pass around...

Michelle, I just have to pop in and say "Thank you!" for becoming a part of AQC and answering our questions. While I haven't submitted to you or your agency, I just couldn't sit back and ignore such generosity and openness from an agent. That is something we all, I'm sure, look for in the ideal agent, and it's great when we can witness it first hand.
