I am ready to publish and I am looking for a cover designer. A friend of mine said her son is in this business and she gave me his e-mail so I could contact him.

Now I know with literary agents it can take weeks if not months for a reply back, is this the same with a cover designer? I e-mailed him a week ago and have heard nothing.

If so, should I consider another option I have? I hate to disappont my friend, but if her son is really busy and I can find one who can create a cover sooner, I might have to do that.

I would say that a week is more than sufficient for a response. Authors compete for agents, whereas designers should, theoretically, compete for design clients. Only you can decide whether you want to disappoint your friend--that's a personal call more than a business one. If you want to erase any guilt you might have, you could email the designer one more time, and give it a couple days before trying someone else. Ignoring a business email for over a week is unacceptable, in my opinion.

That's true, I am paying him, not the other way around. I will contact him again, thanks.

All the people I've ever contacted to make me a cover took only a day to respond. If he can't even acknowledge your request after a week, then he's for sure not someone you should hire. It may take awhile to make a cover, but to discuss what you want and acknowledge a request should be something that happens quickly.

Hi Carmela,

I respond within two business days to my cover clients, no matter how busy I am. An email only takes a few minutes. I do not think it's standard to take a week to respond for most freelance/contractor services, except perhaps for the busiest, most in-demand designers.

I think Licentia's advice is solid. Good luck!

Thank you, the cover to your book is nice. I have two designers now tell me that they don't have time and I have one more option. Any ideas of finding a reputable designer? I am thinking of posting on FB or something.

That's good to know, after I try one more guy, I am going to have to find a designer somewhere else.

Feel free to send me a message if you like my style, but I'm afraid my next opening isn't until March 31. A great place to find affordable cover designers is the "Writer's Cafe" forum on the Kindle Boards. http://www.kboards.c...board,60.0.html Lots of designers hang out there because that's where all the indie authors are. :)

Carmela, I recommend Midnight Whimsy as a designer. She did a fabulous job with my latest novel, The Alliance. (See the cover in my signature below.) She went the extra mile and was very prompt and professional.

Thanks, I do like your designs, but I was able to connect with my last option and it looks promising, but if it falls through I will contact you.
