I always used my initials in my profession, I worked in enforcement and found it threw men off, as they expected a man and they got me instead!

When I moved to writing I stuck with my initials. Part of it was because there is a surgeon with the same first name & last name as me. By sticking with my initials I am very googable.

I was thinking the same thing AW, that it would throw off people of what my gender was and perhaps make me more... readable? For lack of a better word. :)

Apparently that is why Harry Potter was published under "JK Rowling" the theory being boys won't read a book written by a woman.

That's just wrong that we have to do that, but at the same time I suppose I understand their logic. They don't want to read what might be a mushy fantasy romance novel. Lol! :)

I find it odd that women have to use their initials to appeal to male readers, but women have no problem picking up a book written by a man.I wonder if there is any truth to it, or is it a flow on from the sexism in spec fiction?

Hmmm..., not sure.

My favorite author is a man however. Though I do want to read some of Ann Rice. :)

I just always liked the way my initials sounded, since they can technically be a name by themselves. (My father was gracious enough to think of that ahead of time, in the event that I didn't care for my real first name. Such a thoughtful guy!) I pretty much knew from the get-go that I wanted to use my initials for a pen name, though I borrowed the last name Rivers from a previous generation of my family. I really liked the way it flowed together, so it stuck.

I've always loved my first and middle name. Go figure I shouldn't use them for my author name. This also means I have to change my bio. I whipped up a change a few minutes ago in my profile.

Everyone and their mother seems to be using initials, so I opted for a gender neutral penname.  Though, "Eli" probably doesn't seem very gender neutral to you guys since my picture is next to it.  :)

I use initials because the nautical fiction genre is male-dominated (in both writers and readers), so I wanted to avoid reader prejudice against a female writer (though if they flip to the "About the Author" section, etc., they will see that I'm a woman, but how many readers do that when buying a book?).

I try other options and using my First, middle initial, and last name seem like a no brainer. I also like the way it looks on paper.

So I've been thinking about an author portrait for my Facebook Author Page and Goodreads Author Page. When I see a blank picture of someone else's with a book they are selling or even another picture besides their face, it makes me not want to even look at it.

Why is that?

Anyway, I'm uncertain if I should because everyone will then know my book was written by a woman. The whole reason for using my initials will almost be pointless. Except that I've grown accustomed to it now.

Thoughts?

I have three pictures I like, but not sure which one is best. So I'm letting my Facebook family and friends decide for me, sort of like a contest, and announcing the winner on Monday. :)
