Here's the first candidate I've got for my new psychological thriller, Headless.  It likely has a way to go before it's a finished product, but I like the start at least.  Let me know what you think!  Thanks.  :)

Took me a while to figure out that the odd black lines above your name were actually the title. At first glance it doesn't even look like text.

Thanks for the feedback.  Would you say the issue was that there wasn't enough contrast between the letters and everything else, or just that the letters flat out don't look distinctly enough like letters?

I've attached another version, with the background brightness dimmed some and a little more work on making the letter pop out.

The contrast was fine; it's that the letters don't look like letters at first glance.

Those letters really don't look like letters to me :-/

That's the answer I was afraid of.  I've toned down the embellishments this time around, and completely scrapped the L I had before (I think that was the worst offender).

Sam-

What format are you using the cover for?

I like the cover for a paperback book but I don't think I would use it for an ebook cover due to it not being eye catching in thumbnail format.

I think it would look really nice on a physical book though.

I would be, in theory, using it for both eBook and paperback.  I've been tweaking it a whole bunch since the last post, this next one incorporates oodles of changes.  As to popping off the page, I tried intensifying the yellow in the background.  The black lines have been faded into a more natural gradient, too.

I really like the crack effect in the gold color, it really is the letters that throw it off. I know you like it, as you've not posted a version without it, but sometimes what we like isn't what is best. I need to be able to READ what the title is, without straining my eyes. If it's that much of a problem looking at it, I won't even pick the book up. Just being honest. I always look at covers at the library to determine if I want to actually pick it up and read the back of the book. (I know, I know, shame on me.) This is just my honest opinion, take it or leave it, but as an avid reader, it's the best advice I have. :)

do really like the letters, but maybe I'm too close to the situation.  Attached a new one that uses a font that's more, you know, fonty, with some of the embellishments preserved and moved around.

There ya go, that's an improvement. You could keep that or play with it some more, but at least now I can read it! :)
