Small presses are that sweet spot in between agented big six publishing and self-publishing. For the edgy literary writer they may be your best choice, esp. if the agent thing isn't working out and you don't want to pay for self-publishing.
I've published two books on small presses and never once regretted it, even though I never got paid. Just getting published was worth it. One of my CalArts MFA buddies published on Two Dollar Radio, which is mentioned here, a little bit ago. She's done very well for herself.
