I ask because a quick Google search of my legal name reveals lots of details about my current/former profession. Nothing bad, but I've been told that some fiction agents tend to shy away from writers associated with my particular field.

So, I'd like to keep my legal name off of queries to prevent any bias along these lines.

Is this acceptable?

Thanks,

Kat

I've been told to provide both, and make clear which one should be used for publication. Also make it clear to the agent/editor if there is prior work published under the pen name. I have never introduced myself with just my pen name, though.

That's probably right. I'd rather they didn't have my legal name at their fingertips to Google, but perhaps that's unavoidable.

I always queried with my pen name.  I didn't reveal my legal name until I signed with my agent, and it was a non-issue.

That's good to know, Rosie. For every question, it seems that there are several, usually contradictory, answers. This process can be crazymaking! Oh well. Onward!
