London in the 1930s

A couple of questions about London in the late 1930s.

1) Which neighborhood(s) would upper-middle class people have lived in?

2) What would riding the Underground have been like in that period? (This is before England's involvement in WWII, so the Underground isn't being used as bomb shelters yet.)
