When querying, is "literary romance" a suitable genre to list? I'm struggling how to define the story. It is a contemporary feel-good love story, but also a family saga, and it deals with conversations ranging from Camus-style absurdism to The Iliad.

The writing style is intentional and occasionally experimental, but there is a definite plot with a happy ending.

Would upmarket romance be more accurate, or should I generalize it to upmarket fiction? (The love story will be apparent in any query/synopsis from the start.)

I'm having a similar problem. Mine is nominally a mystery, so it fits into that box. But it can also be commercial, literary or women's fiction. I think tailoring the genre it to different agents' interests is the way to go.
