I am writing a novel that starts when MC is 21 thus making it new adult. But the actual story is a discussion of his addiction and his dysfunctional life from age 5 to age 21. So it covers a wide swath.

Is NA the correct genre and is it possible to explain in a succinct query that a novel is coveting 16 years of a life?

NA is a dead genre in the traditional publishing sphere. It's typically used for romances about college-aged protagonists.

Your book sounds more Adult, given that your character is 21 in the present.
