  • Publishing Experience:My debut novel, "The Sister Queens," (March 2012/NAL), was set in 13th century France and England and wove the captivating story of sisters, Marguerite and Eleanor of Provence, who both became queens. My next solo novel, "Medicis Daughter," (Dec 1 2015/Thomas Dunne) traveled forward three-hundred years to the intrigue-riven French Valois court, spinning the tale of beautiful princess Marguerite who walks the knife edge between the demands of her serpentine mother, Catherine de Medicis, and those of her own conscience.

In between I became a "hybrid" as part of a group of six authors involved in a high concept novel-in-six-parts called "A Day of Fire" which released in November of 2014. The book, "A Day of Fire," tells the story of the final days of the doomed city of Pompeii in a way you've never read it before.

Over the past few days I've been looking through books on Goodreads. I had a fair number of books from my shelves or reading threads, but it's nice to stumble across a cover or title you read years ago and forgot until just recently. Anyway, my account:
http://www.goodreads...er/show/7705989

I'm waiting for them to approve my author page, but I'm in no hurry. Right now, I'd like to find some friends and start using the site more seriously. It seems like the kind of thing I'll enjoy.

I have some questions for all of you, though. Which do you think is best: listing, rating, or reviewing? Each takes up more time than the previous, obviously. Originally I only rated books I wanted to anti-recommend, but I didn't realize they'd be listed together and that feels weird.

The other concern is rating people in my own field. For example, there's an author that writes my genre and I'd be interested in doing cross-promotion with him. But while he seems like a nice guy personally, I didn't like his book, and I'm pretty sure he would look for my review if I contacted him. Even though most authors won't care about my account, I hesitate to throw out reviews like I think I'm the arbiter of quality. Valid concern, something I should get over, or not very important either way?

Reviews would let me add some nuance, but that's a much bigger time investment. Most likely I'd only write a paragraph or two for most books. I doubt that'd draw any people to me, but it strengthens the site as a whole since I've read a few books with no or few ratings. Or should I not bother if I'm not going to do a serious book review?

Sorry if this thread is supposed to be listings only, but I didn't see another thread I thought would work better.
