My friend is looking for some age appropriate books dealing with slavery. Her children are early elementary school aged. Does anyone have any recommendations?

  • Publishing Experience:I've had some poetry published in various poetry books, newspapers, and some online things-I don't remember the specifics though. No novel published, yet. Oh yeah-I have had some articles published in various newspapers as well, but-like the poetry- it's been a while...

Fiction or Non?

Ignore that question. I don't know that fiction is really true, I mean, some are "fiction" but they ring truth. Anyway, here's a couple I know of...

FREDERICK DOUGLASS: THE LAST DAYS OF SLAVERY by William Mille

AUNT HARRIET'S UNDERGROUND RAILROAD IN THE SKY by Faith Ringgold

I will see if I can think of anymore that would be considered Elem age appropriate.

Here's a link that has a list of different books

This one has a list as well.

Let me know if you want anything different, or if you need more options or whatever.

This isn't a book, but worth a look nonetheless. A letter from an ex-slave to his old master.
